what is torque-vectoring differential ?

 Torque-vectoring Differential:

This type of differential uses an additional gear-trains system to overdrive the two half-shafts or axles. Torque-vectoring differential fine-tunes the torque transmitted to each rear wheel. This produces a fine yaw moment that can be slow or quicken the car’s rotation during cornering.

These torque-vectoring differentials are more heavy, expensive and complex and reduce slight fuel-economy.

what is epicyclic differential ?

Epicyclic differential:

An epicyclic differential is simply a set of gear train arranged in a planetary system and emits various proportions of torque ratio according to the drive system.

Limited Slip Differential

What is a limited slip differential:

A Limited slip differential is different from the normal differential. It has some unique features for uncertain road conditions. It is a revolutionary improvement for the differential. A special mechanical arrangement is added to it for Road conditions like one wheel on a slippery surface like ice and another wheel is on the ground. At that time this arrangement
locks one wheel that on the slippery surface so that the entire torque can be applied to the other wheel on the ground and the car lifts. This is what a limited slip differential does.

It limits the amount of tough difference between the two axle shafts. It allows the two wheels to rotate on different speeds even they on the same axle.

This is very useful for off-road vehicles where the terrain is usually irregular and much more difficult to drive. This means one of the wheels of the vehicle might be on the solid ground while the other might be on the loose ground, now the wheel which is on the loose gravel requires less force to overcome friction and start spinning.  This would result in a loss of power in an open differential. Hence a limited slip set up is used.

Limited-slip Differential:


It's a function:
A limited-slip differential based on the concepts of an open differential. It works like an open differential most of the time. As soon as slip occurs, it automatically begins to lock itself by viscous fluid and clutch pack, or with a complex gear-train.

The only mechanical limited-slip differential is not able to lock up itself until after wheel slips on the road.
